For many years, Master Power Brakes (and every other company offering disc brake conversions) has simply used the General Motors thought process for converting drum brakes to disc brakes on the 64-72 GM A-body, 67-69 GM F-body and the 64-74 GM X-body vehicles. We aren’t saying what General Motors did was wrong, but we felt it was time to re-visit this system and approach it with a new line of thinking for our Legend Series.
Named to tap into the nation’s fascination with newly created space program, the Ford Galaxie was an instant classic that combined performance and value with distinctive styling. Manufactured in model years 1959-1974, the Ford Galaxie was a full-sized car designed to compete with the Chevy Impala. Older Galaxies are in decent supply, so Ford enthusiasts have been able to acquire these classics for reasonable prices in recent years. We just heard from the owner of a 1963 Galaxie looking to upgrade his drum brakes, and since there are so many of these cars on the road, we figured it made sense to share some advice with our readers.
The conversion is designed much like the original Mustang disc brake option using low profile 4-piston calipers that bolt to an original V-8 spindle. Our approach provides for an installation that is among the simplest in the industry and also allows all 15” wheels to clear and the majority of 14” wheels.
